Advent 2023
Celebrating Advent
For many, the season of Advent is a time of preparation for celebrating Christmas. Yes, it’s that, but it’s also so much more! Christian churches have taken this stretch of 4 weeks to reflect on the advent (“coming”) of our Savior in various ways, looking back to Christ’s birth, looking for how Jesus meets us today, and looking ahead to Christ’s return. Below, we have curated a number of ways that you can enter into this season so that you can take heart and look for the Savior’s coming.

Advent Readings
If you picked up our red bookmark, or if you’re interested in a weekly scripture passage to read and a carol to sing, this page provides the full texts of scripture and song as well as a music link to sing along with. This is great if you are using an Advent wreath as part of your practice this season. Click here for the readings.

Advent Guides for use at home
Here is a selection of resources that are available for free or for purchase in case you are looking for daily readings or reflections.
For Families
Lifeway Kids – This free guide provides weekly readings and activities and follows the same readings mentioned above.
Jesus Storybook Bible Advent Activity Book – Psst, we’re going to let you in on a little secret… If you already own a copy of the Jesus Storybook Bible, there are exactly 24 stories leading up to the one about the birth of Jesus. It’s like a ready-made advent guide! This year, the author has published this companion activity book that enhances the readings from the original book with activities, songs, and more. (P.S. if you’re no longer a kid, these stories are still amazing for older hearts! You can pick up The Story of God’s Love for You, which is the exact same text but without the artwork.)
Advent Season: What Is It, and How Is It Celebrated? – The Bible Project has a great series of videos for older kids that includes word studies that unpack the various themes of Advent. This resource also has a discussion guide to explore the themes together and meet your kids where they’re at in understanding faith in Jesus.
For Individuals and Groups
Every Moment Holy – Sign up for this free prayer journal, which includes scripture, art that aids in memorization, a liturgical prayer, and reflection questions.
Advent: The Season of Hope, by Tish Harrison Warren – Rather than a daily reading plan, this book guides the reader into the practices and background of the season. A great companion book as you follow another scripture reading plan.
Advent Season: What Is It, and How Is It Celebrated? – This was already mentioned above, but this resource from The Bible Project is just as compelling for adults. A discussion guide is included to explore the themes with a small group.
Daily Devotionals via Email
Gospel in Life – From the ministry started by Tim and Kathy Keller, these daily readings include a brief reflection and prayer. Additionally, a video devotional is included each Sunday.
Advent Project of Biola University – These daily readings include scripture, artwork with commentary, poetry, music, and a reflection by a member of the Biola community.
